Land Rover Repair: Removal of 2000 DiscoTD5 starter motor, professional mechanics, heat protector

Question
My lovely TD5 Series 2 Disco intermittently gives ominous "Click", "Click" sounds when the ignition key is turned but eventually starts. Initially I replaced the battery. No change. I now want to remove the starter motor and have it checked. Is this difficult?Do you have any tips on such a project?
Regards  Russ.

Hi Russ,

I removed by starter using several smaller extensions.  I know that there are longer extensions but they are expensive.  Most garages & professional mechanics would have them but not guys (like me) who work in our own garages.  The second time I had to remove my starter, my neighbour, a former Indy Car/F1 instructor, had several extensions to loan me.  Nice.

Its hard to get the starter off the first time but once you've accomplished this task, putting it back on will be much easier.

Hi Russ,

I've replaced the starter on my Disco and the trick I learned was to have a very long extention to your ratchet.  You'll need at least 3 feet to reach the upper bolt of the starter.  That's the only tip you'll need.

Removing the stone gaurd/heat protector is not easy but very important.

Best of luck,
