Land Rover Repair: whining whistle noise on turns 1996 Disco SE7, salvage yard, cv joint

Question
Hello,  We just got a 1996 Disco SE7 and my husband who is more a saab expert is learning all he can, all though he is an engineer by day he lives in his garage, having worked on cars all his life. He is learning all he can about Rovers now.
I have a couple questions:
One-my Disco makes a whistling whining noise while taking corners, little more pronounced while taking rights then lefts.
Two-what is the easiest way to replace the antenna, is removing the whole quarter panel needed?
Three we have a power steering leak, hubby says power steering housing. Any advise?
Thank you

Answer
Hi Sabrina,

good luck with the Disco.  Make sure to register with a local LR dealership so you can be included when there is a factory recall.  Last summer, major recall on Disco fuel tanks (you Disco could have been one of them).  Local dealership was instructed to replace all fuel tanks and (if necessary) fuel pumps.  Most Disco I's had the pump replaced as it was rusting.

P1:  whistle while you turn...cold it be related to P3?  Steering leakage?  Other than that, it could be brake related or even CV joint.

P2:  Remove Q panel and do the install. You'll have to undo the top bolts but you may be able to get away with not removing the entire Q panel.  Make sure to reseal the panel afterwards.

P3:  go to www.car-part.com and look for all your replacement parts.  Will save you big $$$.  1 year ago, I had to replace my PS pump.  Cost me $85 from a salvage yard, shipping included.  Follow the leakage to find the culprit component.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
