Land Rover Repair: 98 disco lse, problem surfaces, computer wiring

Question
I've been reading thru your section and although found very usefull info, still can't find help for my problems. #1 One day i was driving and started to smell something burning. Almost caught on fire, part of the computer wiring, underneath the driver seat caught on fire.I disconected it is running ok. However it seems that the only thing it controls is the radio and speakers, because since then (about 6 months) it's been driving without that part connected,I want to fix it first without having to replace the whole computer. Do not undestand what could have happened.#2 recently my back windows just work when they feel like it. I have to be pushing the buttons to see if it'll work. Any input from you would be very appreciated. Can you tell me where the temparature sensor is, been looking without much luck

Answer
Hi Ivan,

in one of my recent discussions you'll find a reference to a company that specializes in servicing LR's and other high end vehicle sound systems.  Give them a call and they'll help you out with the repair.  They may even tell you how to fix it for a small fee.

As for the rear windows, this is a very common problem with all LR's.  As for the cause, it varies between the window lift motor and the central control unit for the doors and windows.  Sometimes its the switch and other times its the wiring that corrodes.  There is no exact, single, isolated reason for the fault (save poor design).
You'll have to do some investigations, swap switches, probe with a multimeter to find the fault.  It does not help that the problem surfaces at random times.

Best of luck,
