Land Rover Repair: no reverse - 2002 freelander, differential unit, electronic automatic transmission

Question
I have had a tranny in my Freelander go bad. I have put in another tranny (used) with that one being bad also.
Now i have placed another tranny (used out of a crashtest car -under 1000 miles) in it and it still wont back up. Forward is not a problem, works fine.
Just cant figer out why it wont back up. When putting it in reverse you can hear and feel it click in to gear but when the footfeed it pressed, nothing.

Some one please help me before i drag it out in a feild and burn it.

Wife added when the 1st tranny went bad when she was driving it that the gear indicator was scrolling up and down gears. I dont know if that has something to do with it or it was becuase of the tranny slipping.

Thank you

Answer
Hi Brian,

interesting problem....are you sure its the tranny?  Same problem exists with 3 trannies...

Could it be the gearbox?  On the Freelander you have a IRD (intermediate reduction drive) that is sort of an electronic transfer gearbox.  Here's what LR says about it:

The IRD is fitted in place of the conventional transfer box and is attached to the automatic gearbox. The combination of the two units provides drive to the front and rear wheels. The IRD incorporates a differential unit to control the proportion of drive delivered to each front wheel and, in addition, it operates in conjunction with the viscous coupling to give the vehicle a self-sensing four wheel drive system.

Have you checked for any problem codes from the EAT ECU?  The electronic automatic transmission has a diagnostic plug that can read codes and monitor the tranny.  Usually this is done with at LR testbook diagnostic computer.

You may have to bite the bullet and drag this Freelander into the LR dealership BEFORE burning it in an open field. :)

I know how you feel, though.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
