Land Rover Repair: knocking noise from a disco 2, shaft bearings, output shaft

I have a 1999 disco 2 V8/dual fuel auto ES model 67000 miles. Recently it has started to knock when the engine is at idol I cannot see anything obvious and the sound seems to come from the area of the back of the engine/gearbox. the noise goes away when power is applied the sound is a metallic knock I have no warning lights on
any ideas

Hi Philip,

how is the fluid levels?  When was the last time you changed the gearbox fluid? No leaks?  I'd have this inspected before the problem gets worse.  Could be worn mainshaft or output shaft bearings.  Investigate this before it costs you more...like the entire mainshaft!
