Land Rover Repair: 1995 Land Rover Discovery, throttle position sensor, land rover discovery

Question
Hi - Im the new owner (2 weeks) of a 95 Disco.  When I bought it, it was idling pretty roughly, but no problems.  Normally I give it a bit of gas when Im stopped to lighten the rumbling until i give it a tuneup.  Today at a stoplight, it rumbled and then died, the battery light came on.  I started it back up and it was fine all the way home.  After I came home, I changed the bulbs in the headlights (doubt this matters) and parked it for a few hours.  Later in the afternoon I took it out and noticed that it was 10 times rumblier than it was in the morning.  Also, it was coming very close to dying everytime I stopped.  I had to give it constant gas at each light and it was still almost dead.  It was fine when I was driving, until I tried to go up hill.  I had my foot to the floor and couldnt break 30.  It was revving pretty high, but felt like it just couldnt go and that it wasnt shifting.  I also heard a pretty loud metallic clanging coming from the engine.  I know nothing about cars, but all I know is that I spent all my money on the car and cant afford to just buy a new engine or trans.  Im getting my warranty tomorrow, but cant make a claim for 30 days.  Any idea what the problem is, or how long it could go before crapping out?  Oh, its got about 123K mi on it.

Thanks!

Answer
Hi Cassie,

wait the 30 days and then get it repaired.  Could be transmission (the noise you mention).  Could also be valve job or idle adjustments, timing belt, or throttle position sensor.

Make sure you're using octane 91 or better fuel and try to avoid heavy loads, like climbing steep hills...at least until you have it serviced.

Best of luck,
