Land Rover Repair: ignigtion key release, electrical fault, battery terminal

Question
I have a 98 Discovery.  Two part probelm. 1) When starting there are two double chimes and then the chime stays on constant and does not turn off.  2) When turning ignition off, the key will only turn back to a position between the 1 postion and the release position.  I can turn off the Disco and start with no problem,  but the only way to get the key out is disconnecting the postive battery terminal.

Answer
Hi Jason,

could it be that the key is worn down or maybe a copy?  Seems more related to the key and the ignition lock (tumbler).  Do you have another key to test this theory?

Another possibility is that there is an electrical fault somewhere in the ignition switch.

Someone mentioned to me that this problem can arise after an accident has happened.  Something to do with the enertia sensors.

Let me know and we'll move from there...
