Land Rover Repair: 97 Disco Brakes, brake pad, caliper

Question
John,

I'm having an intermittant problem with my brakes. At low speeds (2-3 mph) I hear a whirring sound and my brakes become almost inoperative. If I let off and reapply they are fine. This happens about 10% of the time at those speeds. At all other speeds the brakes work great.

I assume it's an ABS problem. What do you think?

Michael

Answer
Hi Michael,

no...I would not blame the ABS right away.  If you hear a scraping or whirring sound, I'd suspect a seized piston on a caliper.  Maybe on of the pads is worn down as well.

You'll have to listen and determine which brake wheel is affected, remove the tire and examine the brake pad thickness.

Let me know what you find.

Regards,

JohnMc
