Land Rover Repair: Coolant leak, coolant level, coolant leak

Question
I have a 01 4.6HSE. I recently noticed a lack of heat and then intermittent overheating which would subside once I started moving. Coolant level was low. I added mixture as recommended and this fixed the "no heat" and overheating problem but checked coolant level next day and it was low again. Refilled with same result. I do find a small puddle on the floor now coming off the rear of the engine and onto the exhaust. I cannot actually see a leak. I did have the O rings replaced about 4 months ago due to a leak into the passenger side but this is new in the last 2-3 days. It must be a significant leak as there is fluid on the underside of the car and the tank almost empties in a day.

Answer
Hi Mike.  Nice 4x4.  I usually don't hear from 4.6HSE owners...

Yes, you've got a leak probably around the heater core or off the rear of the engine.  It's major enought to have it repaired immediately.

DO NOT ALLOW your engine to overheat!  IF it gets too hot, you could end up with a new engine and a huge repair bill.  The cylinder sleeves have been known to drop if the engine overheats.  Once this happens, there is nothing,  NOTHING, the mechanic can do but replace the engine.

From my perspective, I'm not sure if its a blown hose or something else.  You could have a local mechanic take a look.  It would cost you less than the dealer and if its just a cracked hose...you'll save some big bucks too!

IF its the heater core, you're better off having someone who's experience with LR's do the job.

Best of luck,
