Land Rover Repair: Land Rover Discovery Gear Box Leak, land rover discovery, haynes repair manual

Question
I currently need to add power steering fluid every 3 weeks due to the leakage.  When it is really low I can feel it and hear it in the steering column.  My main concern is getting the leak fixed without all the labor costs of getting into the gear box.  Is there an alternative to this?  From what I understand this is very expensive.  Last question and I will leave you be.  I have a passenger window not working (motor works) and I understand this is an issue with this truck.  Is it difficult for the lay person to replace the regulator for the window?  Should I purchase some LR Repair Software that may walk me through it?  Thanks again for your help.  This site is great!

Hi John, Thanks for taking my question.  I just recently bought a 98 LR Disc.  I am leaking Power Stearing fluid from the gear box.  Is there a seal kit available?  Also, there is a jerking transition from D to R when I shift.  Are there gear box troubles in my future?  I know the work to get into the gear box is costly and I don't have the extra.  Any help is appreciated!

Hi Donald,

You've got to address the leakage sooner rather than later.  How is the fluid level in the gearbox?  I suggest you replace the fluid and make sure the leak is fixed.  I've seen leaks develop so bad that no gears were able to engage.  I was terrified when I could no longer shift gears.  Luckily, it was only low fluid and when I topped up the gearbox, the shifting became much better.

So, drain and renew the fluid.

Best of luck,

Answer
Hi Donald,

I would seriously consider buying the Haynes Repair Manual for the Land Rover Discovery, #3016.  Its about $30 and well worth it.  It has great pics and good DIY'er tips and detail.  It will tell you what can be repaired in your garage and what's best left to the dealer.

Its a bit confusing...seems you discuss the gearbox and then the steering assembly.  I've assumed you are talking about the power steering (PS) pump and assembly.  If you are having trouble shifting gears, that's usually the transfer gearbox just below your center console.

The PS leak seems serious enough.  Without knowing where the leak is, I would think it has to be around the hoses. If its not, you best bet is to replace it.  Hoses usually require O-rings, a cracked steering assembly box is not repairable...unless you are inventive with a torch. Make sure the leak is not running along the main hose from the reservoir.  I've seen this before.

Try www.car-part.com for a salvaged steering assembly units.  Prices are usually very good.

The window problem is very common.  Get use to it cause its bound to come back in a few years.  If you buy the Haynes manual, they have great photos of the repair.  If you ask the question, you already have enough courage to tackle the problem yourself.  Most autoshops sell Haynes manuals and can order one for you.  Atlantic British (www.roverparts.com) stocks them.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
