Land Rover Repair: Land Rover IDLING, valve job, exhaust valves

Question
I have a 1998 discovery LE, and the problem that I have is what seems to be the engine idling rough, missing with a loss of performance. The engine is petrol and has 126,000 + miles on it. I have just replced the spark plugs in hopes that might be the problem, but that only seemed to help a short while. I am really at a loss because this is my 1st rover and am not yet familiar with the way they perform I do hope it is something I can fix on  my own and not have  to have alot of technical equipment to do so.

Answer
Hi Chase,

with the '98 Disco, there are not many adjustments that can be done manually.

For rough idles and missing, try this handy tip: spray your ignition wires with a fine mist of water from a spray bottle for plants.  One evening, start the engine and watch carefully as you spray to see if there are any sparks between any of the ignition wires and the rocker covers or any other part of the engine. If so, replace your wires as they are worn out.

Its also possible that you are experiencing a problem with the exhaust valves.  Carbon can build up and cause the exhaust valves to stick.  This can lead to loss of power and eventually missing and misfires.  A valve job is the only means of correcting this problem.

Change the distributor cap and rotor.  A crack or worn contacts can cause power loss and missing.  Should be changed every 4 or 5 years.  I last changed mine 5 years ago...they're overdue!

Have your ignition timing checked.  Its very easy to do and the tool is not expensive.

Have your battery and alternator tested...just in case.  Advance auto usually does this test for free and they can check for any OBDII codes too!  Also, good place for parts.

Best of luck,
