Land Rover Repair: Rear wheel bearing, circlip pliers, land rover discovery

Question
How do I change a near side rear wheel bearing on a 1991 land rover discovery

Answer
Hi Anthony,

its just like my '95 bearings...you'll have to pop off the tire, remove the hub, pull out the half-axle and remove the bearing.

You'll need a new gasket and lockwasher for the hub, which you can get at your LR dealer.  You'll also need a large socket to undo the locknut found under the hubcap. Circlip pliers are needed too.

So, in order of appearance:

remove dustcap
remove circlip and shim
remove 5 bolts holding hub
remove paper gasket
bend back lockwasher with a strong screwdriver or bar
remove locknut
remove straightened lockwasher
remove 2nd locknut
remove spacer
remove outer bearing and race

Reverse for install.

Make sure the torque is exact.  Too tight and you'll burn out the bearings.  100 Nm, I believe...ask LR to make sure.

My own opinion...if you have to replace the outside bearings, do the inside bearings as well.  There's no telling what stress they may have suffered.  Make sure they are grease packed before installing. Inspect the seal for any cracks.

Best of luck,
