Land Rover Repair: Diagnostic P-Codes, coolant temp, general mechanics

Question
I had a diagnostic done on my 1997 Range Rover 4.0SE. It came back with two codes which they told me I'd have to consult a dealer to tell me what they mean exactly. Well the dealer wouldn't tell me, said I had to bring the vehicle in to the shop instead for a diagnostic.
Anyhow the codes I received are:

P0125 - The PCM has determined that the amount of time it took for the coolant temp sensor to reach an input value consistent with closed loop operation was too excessive.

P1158 - Lack of HO2S22 Switch -Sensor indicates rich...text is cut off on the print out.

Can you tell me more specifics?
Thanks

Answer
Hi Carolyn,

yes...sometimes dealers can be that way.  I hope your dealer is saying this for a good reason, namely, OBDII codes don't often isolate a specific component failure but simply give indicators that an experienced mechanic uses to find the fault.

For example, the P0125 code does indicate coolant temperature anomalies. This code coupled with the P1158 code,  HO2S (oxygen sensor) failed too switch to lean on bank "B", could indicate a problem with ignition, air intake or fuel injection.  Only an experiened mechanic with LR flowcharts can trace out the possible causes.  Most LR mechanics recognize certain codes and know the component that is failing BY experience.

A testbook diagnostic machine, most often found at LR dealerships, could help in locating the problem.  Most general mechanics don't have this type of computer diagnostic tool.  Its too expensive.  Using a OBDII reader is sometimes not enough.  The last thing you want is to swap out (and pay for) parts that are perfectly good.

So, in this case, maybe you should go in and have LR run deeper diagnostics on your Rangie.

Best of luck with this,

JohnMc
