Land Rover Repair: 1994 Diso Overheating, clutch motors, clutch motor

Question
I have a 1994 Discovery - AT, single AC with 142000 miles on the clock. About a month ago started on a trip into the AZ mountains and it started to overheat-guage started to rise rapidly. Came home took it to my local mechanic and he replaced one of the fan clutch motors. Said the one that switches on with the AC was fine, but the other one that comes on all the time was not running. Now I am having the same problem-worse when I switch on the AC, after about 10-15 min on the road the temp guage goes up over the middle zone. Does level off if the AC is not on. In the past three years I have replaced the head gaskets, had the radiator flushed, now the fan clutch motor. Is this something I should take to the LR dealer or is it most likely the radiator needing recoring? You solid advice would be appreciated.

Answer
Hi Chris,

strange that your Disco only overheats when the AC is turned on.  It could be that the rad is only managing the engine and transmission cooling and overheats with the additional load of the AC.

Its a sign that coolant system is on the threshold of its limit.  Is the AC working properly?  That compressor could be faulty and thus make the engine work even harder.

If its only the radiator that needs work, I'd go to a rad shop and have a recore done.  I had mine done this summer, as a matter of fact.  The rad shop was able to add an additional layer on my OEM original rad ('95 Disco).  The rad now works even better! Could be done to your rad too!  I Don't think LR would have done this for under $450

Best of luck,
