Land Rover Repair: Dicovery 2000 TD5 Noise, air leaks, oil leaks

Question
G'day John,

I have purchased a Disco 2000 td5, and since last month I have had blown water pipe, changed it all good and then this noise apeared like a loose metal under the car only when you drive and it come as the shifts gear, with open windows it sounds like its coming from the left hand side but not sure cause doesn't do it when car is stopped, took it to local LR specialist, they said it was a crack in the front pipe where you have a joint to absorb vibration and also they changed the pressure gauge because it was leaking Diesel... but the noise is still there after they changed the front pipe  and its very annoying, also some time when cornering and you've got a bump there is another noise like rrrrrr coming from FRH side like pump trying to push liquid but can't cause not primed sort of noise, I was wondering if you could help me cause I really like this car...and now its leaking oil it not so bad but still!

Answer
Hi Farhad,

the noise you describe could be your transmission or gearbox, especially if you hear this only when the vehicle is moving and changing gears. You should take the Disco to a transmission shop or an actual LandRover dealership for a complete inspection.

Another metallic noise that I am aware of is when the CV joint is about to fail.  Yet, another metallic-like noise that is often heard could be the catalytic converters have come loose inside the "Y" pipe that leads to the muffler.

The other noise you mention could be your EAS (electronic air suspension)... perhaps you have an air leak on that side.

Yes, the 2000 Disco is a very nice 4x4.  Like all Land Rovers, it has problems with gearbox and oil leaks, EAS air leaks are common and if not fixed could lead to the compressor failing (even more expensive to fix).

Best of luck,

JohnMc
