Land Rover Repair: Disco II 2000, power steering pumps, fluid leaks

Question
Hi John,
Last year I purchased a 2000 Disco II with high miles.  I purchased it from a family member who was obsessed with maintaining the truck (all of the oil changes and services)  It is in great condition and I love it.  Recently I have had problems.  In the past 2 months I have had to replace the: transmission, head gasket, radiator, rocker shafter, other gaskets, and a coolent issue.  Lucky for me all of these repairs were covered under the extended warranty.  It now has 95K with only 5K left on the warranty.  I am concerned I am going to continue having problems, is this common?  I am hoping the truck will go for another 100K, is this typical for this model?  I also want to thank you yesterday my rear door wouldn't open from the outside or inside, I was able to find exactly what I needed from a previous question you had answered.  Thanks for the advice, I will be working on my rear door this week and hoping I can get it working again.  Thanks again

Answer
Hi Janell,

your Disco II should easily give you an additional 100,000 kms.  My older '95 Disco I has over 320,000 and still it attracts attention.

Of course, the older they get the more likely you'll have to deal with common problems:

exhaust valve sticking (valve job)
alternator failure
fuel, water and power steering pumps
CV joint failure
Window motor failure
door lock failure
Rear door hinges and door sag
rotors and brakes
ABS, HDC, TC problems
suspension (shocks, air and coil)
fluid leaks (oil, tranny, gearbox)
timing adjustments
water ingress (water leaks into the interior)
cracks in wheel well joints
electrical corrosion in connectors/harness
body panel corrosions (around edges et al)

Those are the most common problems.  Too bad about all the work you had to have done.  Flush all your fluids every 3 years to be on the safe side.  You can always shop for parts in your local salvage yard (wrecker).  I've done this and saved $100's on my parts.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
