G'day mate!  I was trying to detail my DII yesterday and I couldn't figure out how to remove the auto trans gear selector knob.  I have a LR repair manual that is no help, unfortunately.  I'm hoping  you'll know the "secret" as I've tried twisting, turning, pulling, etc and have now managed to actually twist it far enough (with some cracking noises) where the knob goes around full circle...

Hi Benjamin,

I have a manual Disco I and the knob is threaded onto the shaft.  I took a look at some of my notes for the DiscoII and it appears to be threaded as well. Its possible from your description that you just have to keep turning it until it is released.  Its very possible that it can strip so be careful.
