Land Rover Repair: overheating, land rover north, service notifications

Question
Hello John.  I recently purchased a 95' discovery from a private seller.  The first night I drove it it overheated.  It would cool down and I would replace the fluids but eventually ~60 highway miles or stop and go traffic it would overheat again.  I was having to travel back and forth from eugene to portland OR so this was very bad timing and nevertheless within a few days I had some more problems.  My grandfather is a retired mechanic and he and my uncle took the egine completely apart and replaced all the gaskets and wiring.  The thermostat has been replaced and the radiator has been flushed.  But still it will overheat.  I can drive it for 15-20 minutes and its fine and then get to a steep hill and it will automatically overheat.  We are stuck!  What should we do?

Thank you,

Jenelle

Answer
Hi Jenelle,

its possible that the water pump is not working.  Have you flushed the entire engine?  There are temperature sensors that could be faulty too.

My suggestion is to have your Disco examined at your local LR dealership.  You can ask to see what service has been done.

Make sure that when you take the Disco to the dealership, that they address only the overheating problem.  I've known dealerships to work on other components and not address the real problem.   Having mechanics in the family can help here.  They can cut through the BS and not allow unwanted or unnecessary work.

Besides, you should present yourself to the dealership to ensure that LRNA (Land Rover North America) registers you as the new owner.  That way you can be notified of recalls and service notifications.

Did you know that the gas tank on your 95 Disco has been recalled?  I too have a '95 Disco and LRNA notified me just about a month ago of the recall.  They perform all the work and replacement parts AT NO CHARGE TO YOU!  So, at the same time, have the dealership check out your heating trouble.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
