Land Rover Repair: Disc. 2003 noises, general mechanics, power steering pump

Question
Hi:

I bought a Disc. 2003 back in oct.  and this is what I have been hearing for the last 2 months....everytime a press the gas pedal there's a whirring sound, press pedal, whrrrrr. Seems to be coming from the front of the car. Also, while I'm driving and I press the gas pedal and let it go it makes a clunk sound, every time....any thoughts..Thanks

Answer
Hi Debbie,

what you should do is look for the noise in your driveway.  Have someone slightly depress your gas pedal as you are looking under the hood.

It could be one of several possibilities:  a pulley wheel bearing is worn and will eventually seize, a problem with a water, oil or power steering pump, a loose or frayed serpentine belt...

So open the hood, have some press the gas and carefully look and listen to determine where the sounds are coming from.   You can always take your Disco to a local garage and have them inspect the engine area for you.  Usually, general mechanics will take a quick look and can give you a rough guess.

The 'clunk' sound you mention could be transmission related.  You may want LR to take a closer look at this.

If you take the Disco to your local LR dealer, be prepared to pay for the examination and estimate.

Best of luck,
