Land Rover Repair: Sunroof, lithium grease, tilt position

Question
Hi John:

The Sunroof on my '97 Disco will not close.  It hs returned forward as far as it should, but it remains up in the tilt position?  I can hear a slight clicking noise as I try to close it all the way but nothing happens.  Any help is appreciated.

Brian

Hi Brian,

A fellow owner wrote to me stating:

" There is a fairly common problem where the sunroof would start to move back before lifting, thus getting stuck.  It should lift, then move.

The problem is the plastic guides get worn. These are the ones that are bolted to the glass on each side. You use to be able to buy them as separate items from the LR dealer but I'm not sure that you still can.  Somebody said they are now part of a kit.

I'm also told that the Disco 2 ones fit, and have been improved in some way, although I can't confirm that.

hope this helps
Alan "

So Brian, examine the guides along the glass and see if they look worn.  Maybe you can apply some lithium grease to smooth things along.  It that fails, consider Alan's advice and purchase the new guides.   Judging by your description of the problem, it could make sense that the glass is stuck and needs to be freed up in some way.

My '95 Disco has the manual version sunroofs.  The only time it gets stuck open is when I forget to close them. ;)

Best of luck,

Hi Brian,

I've sent an email off to a fellow '97 Disco owner who had a stuck sunroof problem.  As soon as I hear from him I'll pass the info along to you.

Seems strange but try disconnecting your negative cable on the battery for a few seconds.  Reattach and see if the switch works.  You'll have to reprogram your radio too.
