Land Rover Repair: land rover, land rover defender, discovery range rover

Question
I have been working on my own vehicles ever since I could drive, now, my girlfriend wants to get an 88' Land Rover and I have never worked on them. I would like to know some common problems and other things I might need to know to keep this vehicle in good working condition. What type of engine? One other thing, the one she is looking at is an 88' with 86,000 miles and looks nice from the pic but they are only asking 3,995 for it, are we looking at trouble?

Answer
Hi Jeremiah,

I'll need to know the model of Land Rover, engine and transmission (auto or manual).

An '88 Land Rover (defender, discovery, Range Rover) with only 86,000 miles should be ok.  The mileage is low for a 17 year old vehicle, so make sure the odometer is the original.

Maintenance should be ok..just finding the parts will be difficult or expensive.  Salvage yards (wreckers) may help, aftermarket parts exist and then there is the OEM parts ($$$$).

If you do the work yourself, you cut the repair bill in half.

Best of luck,
