Land Rover Repair: Disco II 2000 engine noises, power steering pump, new disco

Question
Hi John, I just bought a Disco II year 2000, after the second day it started making some noises, one of them sounds like a million crickets inside the engine, it only makes the noise when I am driving and have my foot on the gas pedal, if put it on park and accelerate it doesent make the noise, only when I am driving. The other noise is a big "CLUNK" when I shift it from park or reverse in to drive, I hope you can give me a better explanation than my dealer, he said I am just not use to having a 4WD vehicle.
Thank a lot.

Answer
Hi Erick,

that big 'clunk' is worrisome.  It could be a CV joint failure or gearbox problem.  NO normal Disco has loud noises when shifting gears.  Find another dealer and have them examine the gearbox/transmission for trouble.

The other sound you mention 'cricket' could be a bearing failure on one of the pulley components (alternator, oil, water or power steering pump).  IF it is INSIDE the engine, it could be tappets or the exhaust valve.

Series II Disco's have a problem with sticking exhaust valves that require removal, cleaning and replacement: cost is about $2000.  Have a dealer examine this to verify.

Best of luck with the 'new' Disco,

JohnMc
