Land Rover Repair: Discovery II indicator light, lr model, sport mode

Question
I just got a 2002 LR Discovery II,
This is my first LR and i love it.
all though i did not recieve a owners manual with it.
there is indicator light on the dash i am not sure what is means>
i looks like a sprocket with a S inside of it .
Please tell me what is means?
thanks Jason

Answer
Jason,  I just got a new message from a fellow owner:

If it's an automatic, press the Mode button on the back of the selector, and if I am right, the light will go out. It will also go out if you change to low range, then if you press it again an M in a gear will light up, this indicates the "manual mode". Back to high range and Sport mode will activate/deactivate with the button.

I'm not sure if the D2 has a temp warning light or not but if it does it's probably red, while the sport mode light is definitely green (because mine spends quite a lot of time with it illuminated )

If the vehicle isn't an auto then Ralph's answer is probably right.  (Gearbox overheating).

Just wanted to keep you updated.

Jason,

depending on the LR model you own, it could be:

It's the indicator for "Sport Mode" on the gearbox (assuming its an auto!) controlled by the button on the back of the gear shifter. Nothing broken, just makes it go faster or less slowly if a Td5 auto.

or:

It's a sprocket with a number '5' inside it, for main gearbox overheat warning, if it's connected [the same on my 110 isn't].  It would light if the gear oil became to hot during a long climb with a heavy trailer attached, he can get a owners handbook from the LRE bookshop.

So there you have it.  Clearly an owner's manual would help.

Best of luck with this one.  You can always call your nearest LR service department and ask. Good time to introduce yourself and make sure LR knows who the new owner is of this very fine 4x4!  You can always ask to have the warranty book updated.  This will give you an idea about how your Disco was maintained.  LR can also tell you if all required services were performed (recalls et.al.).

Lastly, a long standing tradition is to give your LR a name. Ours is Simba, another friend of mine calls his Spot.  Another tradition is to wave to other LR owners as you pass them.  Acknowledge their fine taste of LR ownership!

Best of luck,

JohnMc

Hi Jason,

you should be able to order a manual from the parts counter at your local LR dealership.  They are also available online and most online services, like amazon, can locate this for you.

I'll get back to you about the dash light and the possible causes.

Please wait for my follow up....
