Land Rover Repair: 2001 Discovery II engine problems, page boulevard, valve stems

Question
I have a 2001 Disco II with about 70,000 miles on it. It has experienced misfiring under load (going uphill) and generated check engine "misfire" codes. According to the Dealer, it appears to be sticking exhaust valves. Cost = about $3,000 to repair. The engine also had problems with carbon build up on the pistons which occurred during the warranty period.  I am wondering if this is common, if there is an alternative solution, how to avoid this in the future, generally looking for some direction.  I am very hesitant to invest another $3,000 into this vehicle.  I was searching the internet this evening and couldn't find anything on this specific subject so appreciate any information you can provide. Thanks much!

Answer
Hello Kurt,

the sticking exhaust valve on Disco series II is a known problem.  It can appear as early as 52,000 miles and even reappear every 50,000 mile or so.

$3000US is too much for a complete valve job.  If you are able, go to another LR dealer.  Most charge about $2000US.  One owner recently mentioned that he found a 3rd party euro-mechanic that quoted him $1500. After all, its replacing exhaust valve stems and it should be easy for any experienced mechanic.

Here is a PDF doc from a reputable dealer* that describes the problem and the work involved to repair it:

Kurt, I wish you luck with this problem,
