Land Rover Repair: engine knock, piston slap, main bearings

Question
Thanks for the quick reply!

It's hard to say if it's top or bottom, but if I had to guess, i'd say bottom (which I know is a bad sign).  The wierd thing is that it comes and goes, so that doesn't sound like bearings.

I'm hoping it's pulleys!

Did you ever find the source of the knock?  Just bought a 95 that has the same sound off and on.

thanks!

Hi Toby,

after much searching, I could only attribute such knocks to loose pistons, poor timing, bearing failures on various pulleys and engine mount failures.

Do you have any idea where the knocks are on your '95?  Top of engine?  Bottom?  Front or rear?

Hi Toby,

so the knocking sound seems to come from the bottom of the engine area.

Here is what I've discovered:

Loud knocking could be worn 'big-end' bearings IF the knocking is heavy AND happens less under load.

Worn main bearings have a rumbling and/or knocking sound that worsens with load (accelerations, uphill climbs, etc).

It could be piston 'slap' on the down side - a serious problem and eventually could ruin your engine.  This is most notable when engine is cold and the knock is high-pitched and terrible to listen too!  This could be a sign that the piston rings or bore is worn dangerously low.

Lastly, for a 'bottom' knock, it could be coming from your water pump.  Either the pump itself or the bearing on the pulley.

I hope this helps.  Changing the water pump should be easy but the other areas require a LR mechanic or a very gifted DIY'er with all the right tools!

Best of luck,

JohnMc
