Land Rover Repair: rear axle fluid, paper gaskets, rear rotors

Hey John,
Do i have to drain my rear axle fluid when i do my rear rotors or is that a myth in the repair manual, also do i really need those paper gaskets for the half axles. Thanks alot for your expert advice.

Hi Eric,

I am not sure which manual you have but I have changed the rear rotors on my Disco and I did not have to change the axle fluid.  Yes, do not forgot to renew the paper gasket for the half axles.  They are only a couple of dollars and they play a vital role in mating those two surfaces and keeping dirt out.  When you pull the half axles out, just be careful where you place it and make sure no dust or dirt gets on them.  Do one side at a time.  If you make a mistake (in any way) you have the other side as an example to help correct.

Best of luck with the rotors.  Its alot easier on the rear than it is on the front!
