Land Rover Repair: Service Engine light and Check engine light, negative cable, long trip

Question
Hi John,

I have a 1998, Discovery with 80K miles. The service engine light and the check engine light came on almost at the same time on a long trip. Needless to say that it made me nervous thinking that the car could have left me stranded. However, it made it to my destination with no problems.

After reviewing this forum, I noticed that someone else had the same question. However, the site that you recommended to look for the answer is not available. Can you please refer me to another site that can give me the answer, or if you are so kind please explain how to get it done?

Thanks in advance.

Answer
Hi Renzo,

Did you just have those two lights activated or was there other symptoms?

To reset those two lights, simply disconnect the negative cable from your battery for a few seconds and then reattach.  Drive the vehicle and see if they come back on.

If there are no other problems, I'd have it examined by a LR dealer. HOWEVER, if you have other troubles at the same time, let me know and I'll point you in the right direction for repair.
