Land Rover Repair: Discovery 1998 electrical problems., cold cranking amps, auto electrician

Question
"For some reason my landrover discovery is having electrical
problems. It first started with the tach going up and down every
now and then. I had the alternator checked out and it was
overcharging. I bought an alternator and that fixed the problem.
Then two days later I heard a squiling noise comming from the
engine after the noise stopped the tach stopped working. After
that the engine seemed to be running just fine. Although my
tach stopped working I drove it all the way home. Going home I
saw the srs and the antilock light go on. My radio and lights
were dimming so I turned them off and the srs and antilock light
went off aswell. I had the battery replaced and it lasted only two
days. I try checking the alternator out myself and removed the
positive wire from the battery while the car was still on. I saw
that the car lights got brighter and my tach after so many days
of t=not working started working. When I put the wire back on
everything dimmed and the tach stopped working. The battery is
new and the alternator is new. Everything working just fine
without the positive wire connected to the battery seems really
weired. what do you think it is, a fualty ground cable, an ampage
problem. I just boght a new battery, well got a new one from the
auto parts placed that replaced the defected one. It is a Duralife
800 cca 1000ca. I installed it in my rover but still had the same
problem. If I remove any one of the plugs from the battery,
everything works normal even my tach. If the battery is plugged
on the tach stops working. Any advice.

Thanks Lucas,

Answer
Hi Lucas,

you could have a ground fault problem with your alt or the alt wiring is defective.  The battery you describe sounds ok.  800 cold cranking amps is the lowest I'd go.

I'd go to a local auto electrician and have them examine the wiring...could be a simple cross in wiring.

Best of luck,
