To quickly by-pass shift inhibitor:

Reach up in front of the underdash cover RIGHT beside the brake pedal & feel around rear-ward for the switch. It takes a limber arm! You can pull the 3 plastic rivets & drop that panel down if you want to look at it. The switch sticks straight back and has a vacuum line just below a 2 wire connector and it's sort of long.

Push the brake pedal slightly with one hand & try to turn the switch clockwise to lock it into its bracket. It shouldn't take much force, so don't break it. While still holding the pedal forward, find the button of the switch that rides on the pedal arm. Pull that button FIRMLY forward until you hear at least 3 clicks, then release the pedal and listen for clicks as it auto-adjusts itself.

Your brake lights & shift interlock should work for at least a couple of pedal cycles - enough to get you out of Park & rolling home.

The brake light switch is easy to replace and if this problem happens once, my advice is to always carry a spare. It will happen again.

If its the shift interlock, the brake pedal has to be depressed and the key turned in order to engage drive. Mostly N.American (NALR)LR's have this 'security' feature. It is usually caused by the shifter not going far enough foward and the interlock will keep it from going out of park. You may have to have a stealership help you out on repairing the interlock.

Hi Luis,

difficult engine starts are often due to the following:

Battery is beginning to fail
Ignition timing needs adjustment
worn or faulty spark plugs or wires
wax forming in fuel (diesel)
fuel injection is fouled or faulted
ignition system component is failing
low cylinder compression

The shifting problem can be caused by a few things:

brake light failure
brake pedal sensor failure
gear shift inhibitor failure

I'll look for some more information on the shifting problem and send you a followup message.  There may be a way to bypass this 'feature'.

Regards,

JohnMc
