Land Rover Repair: O2sensor, land rover discovery, oxygen sensors

Question
I just ordered some universal O2 sensors from you guys for my 96 Land Rover Discovery.  I opened up the box and the universal sensor had 3 wires a black one and 2 white.  My old sensors have 4 wires one red, one black one white and one yellow.  Could you please tell me which wires go where? Thanks

Answer
Randy,

you did not order any O2 sensors from me.  I am not a parts company and do not sell any parts to anyone.  I am a Disco owner, just like you, and I try to help out whenever I can.

If you ordered a o2 sensor from someone, you should have asked for install instructions.  The universal o2 sensor you mention may indeed be suited for MOST vehicles.

Your question to me should be:  Can I match a 3 wire universal o2 sensor to my 4-wire Disco?

Answer:  the Disco heated o2 sensors have a multi-wire plug that they connect to.  If you decide to use a 3-wire o2 sensor, you would be cutting this connector and splicing your universal o2 sensor into the system.  Since these sensors are crucial to the emissions control (ecu) you could run the risk of damaging a very expensive component (ecu = $2000).  Is it worth the risk?

here is a website that may help you.  Pictures are worth a thousand words...and in your case, at least $2000!

This is a great site and this specific page details the LR oxygen sensors.

Best of luck,
