Land Rover Repair: overheating: 1996 LR Discovery automatic, radiator hoses, coolant line

Question
I have replaced the radiator, viscious fan cluch motor, thermostat, radiator hoses, water pump, gear box at a very costly benjamins ($$). The vehicle temperature needle would remain midway, and then for whatever reason would red line then come back down as soon as I pulled over and took vehicle out of gear (neutral)or just slowed down to 35 or less. What else could be causing the vehicle to over heat? Had all the fluids changed and the compression is good. Let me know...perhaps the mechanic did not get all the air out of the line? and if so how do you check this? I love my LR but I'm at my wits-ends.

Answer
Hi Susan,

it could be a temperature sensor fault.  Its possible that air is trapped somewhere in the system but after all you have done, I'd start to look at the sensors, specifically the one located on your ZF transmission.  Strange your LR dealer has not picked up on this...unless they like your company (or should I say business?).

Other owners have complained about the gearbox overheating and thus causing trouble.

An engine coolant line flush can be performed at most local garages.  There is a kit that can be adapted and installed on your Disco.  Every two years, you would then attach a garden hose and perform your own rad and coolant flush.  Takes out any gunk and deposits that can lead to rad problems and overheating.  Worth the $50 or so for peace of mind.

Best of luck,
