Land Rover Repair: alternator, magnetti marelli, eiss bros

Question
I have a 1998, 4.6, 50th ANNIV. limited edition Range Rover. My mechanic has told me that this car takes a special kind of alternator. I need to know what kind this is and where I can buy it for a good price.
thanks
Jim

Answer
Hi Jim,

nice Rangie!  Not sure about "special" alt.  Usually, its an Italian Magnetti-Marelli 120amp, no?  You could try a local parts shop and have them look up the part for you.  Bosch has alts for many LandRovers...including Rangies.  Unless its the core armature, some guys can rebuild the alt.  If its just brushes or bearings (these parts are usually the first to go) then it should be easy to repair for any AutoElectric shop or handy DIY'er.   I did mine just a couple of weeks ago.

OEM is around $500 to $600, rebuilds are about $250 to $350, wreckers have them starting at about $50 and going to about $200.  Rebuilding you own can cost you about $150.  I'd check out the internet for used car parts (wreckers) and locate a used alter for about $75 to $100.  EISS Bros from upstate NY have some parts for LR.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
