Land Rover Repair: The Brakes and the idle, clutch slave cylinder, vacuum leak

Question
I have a 96' Disco and the brake pedal has a lot of travel sometimes. And sometimes I have to step on the brake realy hard to get out of park. I was told by a machanic that it was probly something called a brake booster that allows for the pedal travel that needs to be replaced and a brake relay for the LR to not get stuck in park.Is this common? Also when I press the brake it sounds like air is coming out is this causing the idle maybe due to a vacuum leak?

Answer
Hi Kevin...

I sent a response to your question but the Allexpert system still shows this question as unanswered.  I'll try this again...

This problem could be caused by a failing master cylinder, air in the pedal to master C link, air in one (or all) of the brake lines, a failing pedal clutch (slave cylinder?).

Find some volunteers and bleed air from the system.  One on the brake pedal, one at the reservoir (to top up the fluid) and one to bleed each wheel.

If its the master C, find a replacement at a reputable wrecker, autoparts or even the dealer ($$$).  A euro-mechanic who specialty is brakes can test the system out for you to isolate the problem.

This is known problem with Range Rovers and some Disco's.  I suspect the pedal sensor is not releasing the shifter from park - not enough pressure in the braking system.

Best of luck,
