Land Rover Repair: Disco Suspension List, air adjustable shocks, ludlow vt

Question
Hi John

I am a Proud 3rd Owner of a 97 Disco (100k), and soon after I bought it (over 1.5 years ago) I noticed a slight list to the trucks passenger side. I asked at a dealership  and the tec pointed to a line of series 1s and about every other one had a simmilar list. He said it was a well documented and how someone got some math wong at LR.

My question is... My shocks are past due for replacement especaly on that right side! I once bought air adjustable shocks for a old Toyota 4 runner and "aired her up level"... My LR weighs alot more and how will they effect driveability. The Toy was not a good judge of this. I guess what would be your advice on this fix, I need schocks now and I mine aswell do it all at once! Can the torsions bars be adjusted to comp??

Note: The front right has the most sag, rear could be pulled down from that. The front dips bad if I have to turn left hard, and has become diffucult to cruse at warp speed on the highway. All problems are worse with weight. I cary a full load at times.

Thanks Torin

Answer
Hi Torin,

I am not aware of a 'known' right-sided lean on Disco Series I...but it may be true.  My front right wheel always seems to wear out faster than the others.  I always attributed this to wheel alignment.  Could be design flaw.

As for air suspension in our series I Disco's, most Disco  owners who want the best suspension go with Old man EMU springs, bushings and shocks.  Nothing else compares.

You could go with air but as you know, our Disco's are very heavy and air systems just can't manage that much load and abuse.  I know of many Rangie owners who have air suspension and after a few years are begging for coil and shock replacement kits.  Most of the series II models with air have so much trouble, its just not worth it.

IMO: stay with coils and shocks.  Those air replacements are expensive and you may regret air suspension a few years if you do swap that system in.

At this point, I'm not too confident in air suspension in LR's.  I had a Park Ave that had a good air system but Buick's and Caddy's are still lighter than our Disco's.

Being from Vermont, you're much closer to Rover's North (Rovers North, Inc., 1319 Vt. Route 128, Westford, Vermont)
http://www.roversnorth.com/

They have good prices and seasonal specials - bushings on sale right now.  A heavy duty OME kit for your Disco is about $619.

British Atlantic is just next door in New York.

They sometimes have specials on OM Emu shocks et.al.

Hope this helps you in your decision.
