1996 Land Rover Discovery I
115K miles

Problem: during initial startup, the truck will stall. It will then stall several times. Then later in the
day, the truck will run with no problems. I've had the truck checked by a dealership and by a LR
expert. Couldn't find anything wrong with the OBD check. I'm willing to replace sensors that
really need it, if necessary. I think the truck is in fine shape overall. Just need to get this bug
fixed.

Thanks so much for your help.

Hi Dean,

My '95 Disco had this problem.  Cost me close to $5000 trying to find that #$#$%@!
problem...the dealer liked it though.

The TPS is probably your culprit.  $500 if the dealer does the dirty work, $150 if you do it.

They'll have to put the Disco on diagnostics for several hours to trap this problem.  My dealer
didn't do this for me and it cost me big time.

Do you also have high rev's then deep low's?  Its the TPS for sure.

Best of luck,

Answer
Hi Dean,

no problem.  I hope it is just your TPS.  Threre are other possible causes that I did not mention because they can terrify your budget!

For example, many 4.0, 4.2 and 4.6 litre engines have a sticking exhaust valve problem.  The only cure is a complete valve job - about $2000+  OUCH!  Just in case, have them check the valves on the exhaust side of the engine.  Carbon buildup and glazing are causing them to stick.  Symptomps:  loss of power, missing, misfires, stalls when fully warmed up, worse on hot humid days.

Best of luck,
