Land Rover Repair: 96 range rover high/low range change warning, negative battery cable, nuetral

Question
hi,
i just bought a 96 range rover 4.0 that's been serviced
historically at the dealer.  this weekend i tested out the 4 wheel
drive and followed the instructions on using the h gate shifting
sequence. when i attempted to go back into high , i get i
message in the message center saying "select nuetral" and
flashing illumination in the h gate high gear selector.
i've selected nuetral and waited for the flashing to stop but  it
does'nt. i can drive the car, no problem. but the message
remains constantly in the  message center.
any ideas? or reccomendations?

Answer
Hi Dean,

not being a Rangie owner, I had to find someone who knows what they are talking about.  One owner suggested the following:

"... is the car a manual or automatic?  On the manual box there is a nylon bush on the shaft in the remote housing which wears and the neutral switch is not compressed enough to regester neutral this can be tested by removing and compressing the switch. But if this is the case you have to get a new remote housing as it can not be serviced "

If you don't have an automatic, write me back and I'll keep looking for advice.  Meanwhile, if I find anything else, I'll send a follow-up message.

For my contribution, what if you reset the codes?  Disconnect the negative battery cable for a few seconds then reconnect.  You'll have to reenter the radio CD security code and reset your clock.  Maybe this will clear up the error.

My Disco is not as complicated as your Rangie.  I select neutral, engage the low diff then shift normally for the 5 lower gears.  I envy your Rangie but its times like this I like the simplicity of my Disco.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
