Land Rover Repair: check engine light, coolant level, general mechanics

Question
i have a 1998 range rover 4.6hse..the check engine light came on when my coolant level was low. i tried your suggestion of discoing the neg. battery terminal..no luck..i took it to the dealer they said engine temp sensor failure or t-stat need replaced for a mere $450! any other suggestions?

Answer
Hi Doug...if you can reset the code, it usually indicates a serious error.

To replace the thermostat is not that complicated.  Draining fluid, removing hoses, possible removal of dist. or coilpack or other component.  As for temp.sensor, this I have never touched (knock on wood!).  IF you are able to do this work, you'll save yourself some money.  If not, most general mechanics should be able to do this for you. Beats paying $100/hr for the dealer.
