Land Rover Repair: Rear view mirror 95 Discovery, buick park ave, sheet metal screws

Question
I have a Land Rover 95 Disocvery and the rear view mirror will not stay in place.  It attaches to the front windshield and I've tried everything from the proper car part (two-way foam tape) to super glue to contact cement.     I live in a hot climate and I thinks it melts the adhesive or something.

Thank you!

Answer
Hi Sheryl,

I have the same 95 Disco and here is how I repaired my mirror problem:

On the ceiling panel, just above the location of your mirror, you should see and area that has a vinyl piece.  Some Disco's have controls here where others do not.  My Disco did not.  I drilled two small holes on either side of the base of the mirror.  I found two small black sheet metal screws and secured the mirror base to the vinyl plug plate.  I had removed the vinyl piece from the ceiling and after I attached the mirror I re-installed this into the ceiling.

Like you, I too found that the window adhesive was not working.  If you bring the mirror off the window and onto the ceiling, I'm sure you could mount this securely.  My interior colour allows me to use black screws to mount the mirror.  It gives it a rugged look.

If you are absolutely locked into glueing the mirror to the windshield, you have to make sure that the area is clean.  GM has a system of glueing that can be purchased.  These kits come with a base cleaner, primer and then two separate tubes of resin and hardener.  I have used in on my Buick Park Ave and even in the hotest temps, it has not moved.   You could try this route.

So Sheryl, I hope one of these two suggestions can help you out.  The two-sided foam is not very good and super glue won't work either.

I wish you luck with this,

JohnMc

NB:  some people use alcohol to prep the windshield before applying adhesive.   A special glue is required for windshield mirors and most Auto part shops should carry this.
