Land Rover Repair: Anti-theft Alarm System, land rover discovery, discovery tdi

Question
I own a 1998 Land Rover Discovery (Tdi) and recently, I realised that when attempting to lock the vehicle using the remote handset - the horn would "sound" twice and the locks would close and re-open. However, if one attempted to open any of the doors after the vehicle was "armed" - the alarm (horn) would "sound" repeatedly.

A few days ago, while performing the operation of locking the vehicle using the remote handset, I noticed that the locks still closed and re-opened as they did before, however, the horn did not sound twice and when the door was opened after the "arming" of the vehicle, the alarm (horn) did not sound but rather the hazard lights would flash repeatedly.

My questions are:   1) What's wrong?
        2) How can it be fixed?

Answer
Hi Ian,

there is little you can do but take your Disco to your local dealer and have them test your alarm system.  It could be as simple as the arming sequence and as complicated as the alarm unit itself.

The alarm sequence on my '95 Disco was just 3 flashes of the vehicle lights.  When my key fob battery would fail, the alarm did act a bit weird and sometimes it would activate and other times not.   After 7 years, the alarm sensor that accepts the RF signal failed completely.  Now, only the drivers door activates the alarm.

This could be the case with your Disco.  Just have the dealer run some tests to determine where the problem may be and how much it will cost.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
