Land Rover Repair: Land Rover discovery, land rover discovery, diy mechanic

Question
Good day.  I'm considering buying a 1997 Land Rover Discovery.  What is your opinion on that vehicle?  Also, what troubles should I look out for?

Compared to other vehicles, how would your rate in terms of relaibility?

thanks

Larry

Answer
Larry,

how do I say this...RUN!  unless the vehicle has been stored in a barn a few months after importing, don't step into the auto money pit of hell!

These older Disco's (series I) have problems with ABS, alternators, TPS, MAF, steering dampers, ball joints, CV's, ECU's, rear door hinges, door locks (even worse if you live in cold climate), power anything.

If you have to repair it, get in touch with your mortgage company ahead of time.  Parts are outrageously overpriced and hard to find alternatives.  Rebuilt anything is good but price differences are not significant...unless you are lucky!

If you are a DIY mechanic and you like to tinker...early Disco's are just right for you.  But beware...if you are married, you could find yourself in the garage more times than your partner would like.

Some LR dealers are better than others.  If you find one, let the rest of us know.  Meanwhile, some of us owners are faced with dealerships that have no sympathy for older Disco owners and there aging steeds.  They smile when reach for our wallets.  Labour charges are around $100/hour and I have rarely had a visit for under $700.  Last 2 visits in Mar.Apr.2004 cost me over $5000.

So if you want to throw good money at a 4x4, the older Disco is ready to burn it all!

Seriously, consider an newer model (2000 +). Yes, they have their own problems with ACE, ABS and some other areas but the trouble list is much shorter.

Reliability:  (smile)

when its working, you won't find a better 4x4.  I've been through 4 feet of snow, 3 feet of water, 2 feet of mud, freezing rain on highways, high winds, blizzards and this 4x4 operated like a dream.  I live in the Laurentian mts. and I have driven by ATV's who were stuck! Spring brings washed out and washboard gravel roads.  The Disco handles them with ease.  Its a shame that the problems that plague the older series cut into the fun I had with this 4x4.

Someone asked me if I would buy another.  I would only buy a newer Disco and only after it has been FULLY inspected by the dealer.  You have to insist that the dealer run FULL diagnostics on the vehicle otherwise they only take cursory views.

If I sound bitter...than you hear me well!  I've put over $12,000 into this 4x4 and add this to the $45,000 price tag.  ya..I'm bitter.

So look at new Disco's.  Freelander seems nice but ground clearance is my concern.  Rangies are beauties but you just never want to take a $80,000 4x4 off road - ever! Check out the defender...they are real work horses!

Best of luck in your decision,

JohnMc
