Land Rover Repair: Turn Signals, turn signal switch, lucas electrics

Question
I have just recently lost my turn signals. I checked all the fuses and they seemd to be fine. Is the round plug in the main fuse box the flasher? Could that be the problem? You can see the bulbs work when the security alarm is turned on. (1996 discovery)

Answer
Hello Rob,

this will sound strange but you may have a lightbulb burnt out somewhere.

If you've lost your turn signals, the first place I'd start looking is your rear turning lights. See which one is lighting up and which on is not.  Then check the front turning lights.  Same with sidelights.

Lucas electrics has the vehicle divided into two halves on a circuit.  IF one light burns out OR if a bulbholder assembly is shorting out (another possibility in your case), it can knock out your ability to use the turn signal switch.  Same with your dashboard lights, your centre console lights...its strange but we're stuck with it!

SO, start looking for burnt out bulbs.  Then check the bulbholders.  I'd go this route before questioning the turn signal switch itself.

I been down that road a couple of times:  turn signal not working on my '95 Disco...a burnt out bulb and a shorting bulb holder in rear bumper lefthand (LH) side. Replaced bulb and installed new bulbholder and signals began to work again. Seems one of the pins in the connector rusted out...figures it was on the bumper and lots of crude gets kicked up into that area.

My next problem was with all the dashboard lights not working: turned out to be the RH sidemarker bulbholder had a short.  A little soldering and it was good as new. But it took awhile to find the problem.

Good luck,

JohnMc
