Land Rover Repair: rough idle, discovery series ii, land rover north

Question
I have a 2000 Discovery Series II that has a rough idle problem.  It becomes magnified when the a/c is turned on.  The vehicle is still under warranty but the service people here in Tampa, FL refuse to do anything until a check engine light comes on.  I have had it at the dealership twice for the problem.

I get a slight "hiccup" or rough feel to the idle after the vehicle has fully warmed up.  The engine just seems to be missing slightly, maybe a bad plug wire or something simple, not really sure.

Any advice you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi Wes...what's the status of your lack of service?

Let me know if I can help.

Hello Wes,

You have a bigger problem...lack of service from your LR dealer.  Contact LandRover North America and tell them that you have been refused warranty service "until the check engine light comes on".   Don't wait until the warranty expires and you get stuck with a huge service repair bill. *

Adding a load (the radio being turned on) and having it impact your idle can indicate problems with your alternator, battery, spark amplifier, coilpack, even ECU problems.  It might be as simple as a faulty spark plug or wire, even the serpentine belt can be slipping.  IF you are still covered by warranty, insist on having the dealer service the vehicle and isolate the problem.

You are entitled to complete satisfaction.  Insist on it.
Explain your complaint and have them contact the dealer and get them to service your Discovery.

Best of luck, Wes.

*  ECU is $2000; alternator is $800   don't wait until the warranty expires!
