Land Rover Repair: Disco 1 (1998) need to get the trailer wiring harness out, trailer wiring harness, phillips screw

Question
Hey John,
I looked pretty closely and I don't see the flat connector. I did get the panel off and got the interior trailer connector out. It was just one phillips screw with a round plastic cap to fool the casual observer. The harness is short (doesn't reach out the back door - only 10 or 12" out the plastic panel behind the Jump seat) and the connector has a nonstandard 7 pin arrangement. There is no provision for a proper passthrough hole so the panel can be put back on but I routed it through the cutout for the jumpseat hinge. Hope it doesn't pinch. I guess gentlemen don't pull trailers! I think I will just cut off the connector and spice in a 6 wire cable and go back in the panel and out through the floor of the boot to a bumber mounted 6 pin connector like it should be. Otherwise I have to buy the $70 adapter cable kit. This will apparently still need to lay across the door seal so I might as well keep my money and do it correctly. I also got the mirror changed. Haven't played with the wipers yet....
Thanks again for the help
Mike B

This one has the inward facing jump seats. Isn't the trailer wiring harness behind a panel behind the right Jump seat? What is the best way to get the harness out where it can be used. Does the Jump seat need to be removed? Special tools? Take the damn truck to the dealer and pay them to do it for me?
Thanks

Hi Mike,

I don't have jump seats in my Disco, so access to the harness is via the hatch for the rear light cluster.  You may have to remove your seat to access this harness.  Do you have a problem with the trailer connector found below your rear bumper?

I'll post a followup when I have some info on your 98 Disco.

Hi Mike,

My Disco has a small connector plug "flat 4" below the rear bumper just behind the hitch receiver.  Its integrated into your dashboard and you should see the trailer hitch light everytime you activate your turn signal.  I taped my flat 4 plug to the side of the hitch receiver to prevent it from hanging too loose.

I think it this was a standard feature on Disco Series I and is an option on Disco Series II. If yours is missing write back to me.

Keep me posted,

Answer
Hi Mike,

Right now I am working on a problem with either my differential or one of the front CV joints.  While I'm under the vehicle, I'll check around and see where the wires poke out for the flat 4 plug.  You'd think there would be a hole and a plastic plug down there to allow you to run the wires out.

Glad your mirror install was a success...hope you don't have to reach into your pocket for a new wiper motor assembly kit...$200+

Best of luck,
