Land Rover Repair: Yellow engine warning light, negative battery cable, land rover discovery

Question
Land rover mechanic said the problem was a vacuum problem, but I am not sure whether to believe their recommended ring job.  Light originally came on when I hit a big puddle!..

Miguel,

Did they at least tell you what error caused the warning light to trigger?  Did you know that you had a compression problem?  How is the power of your Disco, especially going up steep hills or towing?  If you have a choice of LR dealers, then next time you see the warning light, go to another dealer.  Otherwise, have the dealer give you the error codes that cause the warning light to trigger.  Let them know that you are no ordinary owner!

BTW:  did you know that you can reset the warning lights?  Disconnect the negative battery cable for a few seconds, reconnect, key in the security code for your radio CD player.

Another owner just told me that more than likely, a plug on an engine sensor was shorted temporarily by water, causing the light to come on.

his comments:

" Unless the engine has been noticeably damaged by being hydraulic'ed (submerged), which I think you'd notice as well, rings have nothing whatsoever to do with the check light and if that is the case, it's going to take more than a set of rings to repair.   Sounds like the garage is trying to take the p*ss.  Take the car elsewhere"

Best of luck,

Hello Miguel,

Am I missing something here?  I don't know how a vacuum problem can be cured by performing a ring job on your engine.  Perhaps you had an existing vacuum problem (although small and unnoticed) and it was agrevated by playing in mud puddles (was it fun!)  I am very suspicious if someone told me this.  I have asked around other Disco owners to see if they can help with this.  I hope the dealer is not misdirecting you for monetary gains.
Meanwhile, you could go to any other euro-mechanic and have them test your vacuum system.  I'll post a follow-up if any other LR owners have some constructive comment.

For me, I'd question this statement and ask the dealer to demonstrate how a ring job would impact the vacuum pump or line.

Best of luck,
JohnMc
