Land Rover Repair: How hard is it to change out a gear box...., cross shaft, nuts and bolts

Question
I need to change out the gear box on my 73 SIII 109.

I understand that the only way to do it is to remove the floor and start from the inside? Is this true. How hard is it to do? Any really important things I should know? As you can probably guees I am no mechanic, but it seems straight forward enough.

Mike,

here is what I have found out for you:

First, a fellow in Kent UK has a gearbox, " a good one", that he's not using.  If you want it, its yours. The gearbox this fellow has is complete with transfer box and ready to fit.

Second, replacing the gearbox on a S111 is an easy job about 1.5 days, if you are not sure.  If you are sure and you have the right tools, you can do this in .5 day. Usually, removing the box is from the inside, then through passenger door.  You'll need a good engine host for this.

Third, check the chassis member under the gearbox first. Some are bolted in and it is possible to remove the gearbox from underneath.  You will still need to remove the floors, tunnel and bell housing access panel - to hold it in place as you are removing it.

Fourth, on a lefthand drive model you will need to take out the handbrake cross shaft.   If there is no removeable crossmember you will need to take out the seat base. It's not complicated just lot of fiddley nuts and bolts.

That's about all I could determine from here.  Let me know if you are interested in the gearbox offer...I'll pass the message on to the owner.

Best of luck,

JohnMc

Hello Mike,

I am a Discovery owner...but I have asked around to some Series III owners for their comments.  If you're a seasoned DIY'er, I don't foresee any difficulties.
Consult your LR dealer Parts Department for a complete parts list.  I'm sure they'll provide one.

I'll post a follow-up if any SIII owners send me any comments that will help you.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
