Land Rover Repair: Land Rover Disco Front end, steering damper, ball joints

Question
I have a 98 Discovery and recently it has become very difficult to control the steering on the expressway ..it tends to wander especially where there are furrows in the payvment cause by excessive truck traffic.Once I find myself in one the Discovery is almost unmanageable and it is very difficult to steer out of. I had it in the shop and they say that there is nothing wrong with the alignment or front end. Any thoughts??

Thank you

Answer
Hello Michael;

This is a difficult problem...you say that LR service found nothing wrong with the alignment or front-end.  Hmmm.
It could be a steering damper problem.  Does the vehicle shake and shudder?  If yes, its the damper.  If you find the steering loose and clunky (is that a word?) it could be your ball joints but this is a front-end component.  Have the steering inspected.  Lastly, have your tires checked.  It is possible that they may have belt separation (wild shot there).

NB:  another component of the front-end that affects steering is shocks.  Have them inspected by a third party if possible (second opinion).
