Land Rover Repair: Check Engine Light, abundance of caution, factory stereo

Question
My discovery overheated the other day.  I took it to local land rover repair facility out of an abundance of caution, the fan clutch checked out so they flushed the radiator and replaced the thermostat and it seems to be fixed.  The check engine light came on with when it overheated and now continues to be on.  Can this be reset similar to the service engine light?  Should I be worried that there is something else wrong since the light remains on after service?

Answer
Hello Frank:

What did the LR Service person say when he finished his work?  Why did they not notice that the Check Engine light had remained on?

You can try to reset the Check Engine light by disconnecting the negative terminal battery cable. Remove the connection for about 5 seconds and then reattach.  This will reset any errors that may have been 'flagged' during your mishap with the fan clutch.  You will also have to reset your clock and install your Radio security code (if you have a factory stereo system).

HOWEVER, if the Check Engine light reappears, you'll have to return the the dealer and have them check it out.

I am not surprised to hear that the service people just did not reset the error system.  I also has some service work done once and was discouraged to see the same warning light.  My LR service simply said "oops" and "we forgot to reset this...sorry".   I hope that is the case with you.

Best of luck,
JohnMc
