Lexus Repair: Changing a starter, 1993 lexus sc300, lexus sc300

Question
Hi:

I baught a 1993 Lexus SC300 a few months ago. About 5 times a week, I turn the key and all I hear is a click. After repeated key turns the starter engages for maybe a half of a tuen. More repeated key turns and the started finaly turns and the motor starts right up. I've alraedy put in a new battery, but the problem continues. I picked up a started this weekend but have not had the time to mlook under the car to see where it goes and what may be involved with the replacement. Do you think this is a job a backyard mechanic can do at home? On what side is the starter, and how do I change it?

THANKS a Lot

Dave

Answer
It sounds like the starter and just as long as you have some way of lifting the car enough so you can get under it you should be fine. Starter is on the drivers side of engine and you will need a 14mm socket, extension, swival for socket and 12mm wrench.

Disconmnect battery
remove 12mm nut for main power wire at starter
unplug secondary power wire at starter
remove two bolts that hold in starter
reverse for install
