Lexus Repair: transmission repair, snap ring pliers, lexus es300

Question
i have re-building transmissions for over 15 years and i am stumped. i took the trans down on my 93 lexus es300, disassembled and orderd a kit. when it came time to re-assemble i found myself in a world of hurt. the one way sprag fits both ways, does this go with the machined smooth side down or up?
HELP PLEASE!

Answer
THERE IS ACTUALLY 2 ONE-WAY CLUTCHES IN THAT TRANS. I ASSUME YOU HAVE ALREADY INSTALLED O/D BRAKE,O/D PLANETARY GEAR AND O/D CASE ON THE REAR OF THE MAIN CASE.THE NEXT PORTION TO BE INSTALLED FROM THE FRONT TO THE REAR IS THE REAR PLANETARY RING GEAR. THE NEXT PIECE IS THE REAR PLANETARY GEAR. NEXT IS WERE PEOPLE GET CONFUSED. INSTALL THE #2 ONE-WAY CLUTCH, THIS IS THE ONE I THINK YOU'RE HAVING PROBLEMS WITH.INSTALL IT SO THAT THE REAR PLANETARY GEAR, WHICH WAS INSTALLED PREVIOUSLY, TURNS CLOCK WISE INSIDE THE ONE-WAY CLUTCH YOU HAVE JUST INSTALLED. USE A BIG SET OF SNAP RING PLIERS.PUT THE TIPS IN WERE THE PLANET GEAR STANCHIONS ARE.IF INSTALLED CORRECTLY, IT SHOULD TURN CLOCK WISE AND NOT COUNTER CLOCK WISE.I'VE SEEN THE ONE-WAY CLUTCH HAVE THE MACHINED SIDE UP AND/OR DOWN IN THE PROPER POSITION. ITS BEST TO INSTALL IT THEN CHECK IT. IF IT'S WRONG PULL IT OUT AND TURN IT OVER AND CHECK IT AGAIN.THE OTHER ONE-WAY CLUTCH IS THE #1 ONE-WAY CLUTCH. THIS ONE GOES IN FRONT OF THE B2 BRAKE CLUTCHES. THIS ONE IS PRETTY SELF EXPLANATORY. I HOPE I HAVE HELPED YOU. GOOD LUCK
