Lincoln/Mercury Repair: 1993 f150 tranny, throttle position sensor, computer brain


Question
no the overdrive light is not blinking.we dont have a cottman locally its about 92 miles away.our last amaco closed this summer.so we dont have anything there either.

i`ve a 1993 f150 with the 5.0 and the eletric overdrive trans.two years ago i had and an advance auto rebuild tranny put in.it never seemed to shift right.but a couple of months i was driving it on 80/90 tollroad when the over drive stopped working.so now when i put it in drive it shifts late and hard till it warms up.after its warm it shifts smooth but still a little late.but if you put it in overdrive it wont shift up warm or cold.i`ve been told it could be the tranny computer brain went out or a relay.

I assume that the overdrive light is flashing. This will indicate the problem and the repair. I suggest you take it to Cottman transmission and have it scanned. They will do this for free. I hear that Aamco is now doing this for free also.

I would guess then you will have to take it to a transmission shop in town. From what you are telling me, because there is no light on, you may end up having to rebuilding that transmission. Sounds like a bad pump and there is an undated one that rebuilders are SUPPOSED to use and a number of other parts, including an updated solenoid block.

On the other hand, this could be a bad speed input speed sensor (as opposed to an output speed sensor, because an output speed sensor, your speedo wouldn't work and you didn't mention that was an issue) which will not always turn on the light. That's why it's important to get an accurate diagnosis and some one that can read data stream. If the computer doesn't know how fast the transmission is turning, it wont know when to shift. Incorrect data to the computer could make it shift early or late. Also, on the engine, there is a TPS (throttle position sensor) that tells the computer where your foot is on the gas pedal. If it is sending incorrect information it could shift early or late. In this case, if the TPS is sorted, the computer would think you are calling for passing gear all the time. It is important that you see a good transmission guy or this will end up being a nightmare and money pit.
